Beef cow/calf workshop

We are pleased to announce the start of our new programme focusing on the main issues surrounding beef production from the suckler herd, with the kind support of MSD. The late dry cow stage, early lactation and health management of the calf are all vital stepping stones in profitable production.

Our masterclass will be split into three modules throughout the course of the year:

  • Late March - Calf health – reducing sick days and mortality, dairy bull calf management. Setting the cow up for breeding – BCS management in the dry period for fertility, feeding in early lactation including mineral supplementation. Breeding management including vaccination protocols.
  • Late August Feeding for growth, creep management, transition to fattening for different classes of cattle, parasite control. Managing the weaned calf
  • Early November – Housing routines for cows, weanlings, finishing cattle. Feeding guidelines with different forages. Lameness and pneumonia control.

All modules will be hosted in Gurteen Agriculture College and facilitated by Martin Kavanagh and Gerry Giggins. The modules will be practically focused, using the colleges 70 cow suckler herd and modern beef production facilities.

Places are limited to allow for maximum interaction and learning and can be reserved on a first come first served basis. The cost for the three modules is €185.  Lunch and light refreshments will be provided on each day.
