2013 - A great year for exports

The wonderful growth story of the Irish Agriculture export industry was furthered this month with the release of Bord Bia's latest report on Irish food and drinks exports. Bord Bia, the Irish Food Board, acts as a link between Irish food, drink and horticulture suppliers and aims to develop markets for Irish suppliers.

Considering the current local economic climate in Ireland (poor but Irish exports growing improving) and the flat world economy, the results for 2013 are impressive and make wonderful reading.

The value of Ireland's food and drinks exports grew by over 9% in 2013 bringing the value of exports in 2013 to just under €10 billion for the year. The food and beverage sector continues to go from strength to strength.

The value of food and drink exports has grown by over 40% since 2009 while export values for dairy product and ingredients exceeded €3 billion for the first time.

Export values for meat and livestock came in €3.3 billion, while exports of prepared foods hit €1.65 billion.

The UK remains the country's biggest export destination accounting for an astonishing 42% of food and drink exports. An estimated €4.1 billion of products reached the UK market in 2013.

Exports to China also grew possibly due a visit from the Chinese Minister for Agriculture. Chinese exports are up 40% in the year.
